Summary

The US wholesale electricity markets heated up ahead of summer 2018 as two regions drew close attention by market participants: Texas and the West.

In Texas, forward electricity prices skyrocketed into triple-digit territory ahead of summer as generation reserve margins dropped below required levels in the wake of several coal-fired power plant retirements.

Out West, lower hydro generation levels, coupled with possible natural gas pipeline and storage issues, had market participants on edge ahead of summer as a regional grid operator expected demand to soar to near-record level if hot weather bakes the region.

Will Texas retirements and hot weather translate into volatility in the Lone Star state? Will expansion of renewable generation help counter low hydro generation levels as demand picks up this summer?
