Coupled with supply restrictions by OPEC and Russia, and a more conservative approach to US shale investment, this has dramatically tightened markets. The very large global storage surplus has been eliminated and stocks are now below historical levels. Low inventory levels along with elevated perceptions of political risk have pushed prices higher accompanied by substantial backwardation.
